Cultivating his technique since the early 80's, Ben Miller/degeneration creates a sonic tapestry that defies standard guitar playing. Miller produces a dense, multiphonic soundscape by outputting several pickups separately through various effect chains. With the addition of analog tape, SK1, MG1, and radio, it is difficult to discern where any one sound originates or where it is heading - and it is with this subconscious and subliminal approach that he adheres to. Miller's next Eastcoast tour May 30 - June 3 will include Sound Art Workshops, Multiphonic soundfare, arch-top guitar dinner hours, and Baritone guitar with drummers Matt Weston (A.S.C.) and John McLellan (Boston).

SPROTON LAYER was a psychedelic rock band based in Ann Arbor, MI thriving from 1969 to 1970. The band members were all in High School. They later went on to play in Destroy All Monsters and Mission of Burma. Journalist Michael Azerrad described their 1970 recording "With Magnetic Fields Disrupted" in his book Our Band Could Be Your Life (p) 2001
"...a valuable document of an amazing band that sounded like Syd Barrett fronting Cream."
Roger Miller: Bass, lead vocal --- Ben Miller: Guitar, harmony vocal
Larry Miller: Drums --- Harold Kirtchen: Trumpet

This year, the band is reforming for the first time in over 40 years to support their recently remastered release of "With Magnetic Fields Disrupted" - a 1970 recording - on the German psych label World in Sound.
2013 concerts; June 14 & 15; July 25, 26, & 27.

Miller provides live multiphonic sound design for NOX, a performance expounding on Anne Carson's book of the same name. This multi-media piece has been performed in Boston, Miami, and NYC with Anne, Robert Currie and former Merce Cunningham dancers Rashaun Mitchell and Silas Riener.
“... the electric surges in Benjamin Miller’s score threaten to push past séance into horror-movie territory. Yet the way that a chaotic force seems to break through the classicism of the dancers’ Cunningham training is a fit analogue for the way that grief breaks through Ms. Carson’s erudite attempt to contain it.” __ NY Times 2012

Miller has explored psychedelic songwriting, spontaneous improvisation and notated scores in quasi-tonality for what seems like eons. His primary sound-makers are Guitar and Multiphonic Prepared Guitar, Alto and C-Tenor Saxophone, Tape and Electronic Manipulation and Voice. He currently provides several unique Creative Workshops and teaches Music one on one and in groups for children and adults. In 2012, Miller published his first novel On the Brink and is now embarking on a second novel, a manual for his unique 21st Century Composition techniques and a book on Creative Intention. Miller was raised in Ann Arbor MI having since formed and collaborated with various ensembles focusing solely on original music. He has resided in the NYC metro area since 2003.
